WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Development Services Department is inviting residents to provide feedback on proposed changes to municipal code regarding wireless communication facilities within residential areas. This comes after the wireless communications industry asked the city in 2019 to consider revising its municipal code to allow for wireless communications facilities within residential zones on non-residential lands to use stealth or camouflaged design and technologies.

The city council directed development services staff to seek input from the community on the industry’s request before proceeding with draft code revisions. From May 12 to June 3, 2021, the city hosted a virtual open house and survey to solicit community input on wireless communication facilities. A total of 158 surveys were submitted during the open house.

Using input from the surveys, staff drafted changes to the Walla Walla Municipal Code Chapter 20.170, which addresses wireless communication facilities. Now the city wants to hear from residents again. Citizens are invited to visit the updated Wireless Communications Facilities Code Open House, review the information provided, and share opinions of the proposed code changes. A form to submit comments online is included on the page, or comments may be submitted in writing. They are due by 5 p.m. on May 2.
