SUMPTER – It says something about Eastern Oregon’s connection to nature that a prominent threat to safe food donations isn’t vandalism or spoilage, it’s bears getting into things. Thankfully, the Sumpter community is taking steps to keep donations safe from the hungry giants with a new bear-safe pantry.
According to the Baker County Safe Communities Coalition, the new pantry was set up by local resident Matt Armstrong who assembled it from materials recycled from the city’s old redwood water tank. The pantry itself was purchased with funds from the local Community Health Partnership, Baker County Safe Communities Coalition, and New Directions Northwest.
