City of Hermiston begins $1.34M project to replace century-old water mains 

HERMISTON — Construction is now underway on a $1.34 million water main replacement project designed to eliminate deteriorating steel pipes from the 1920s and remove potential lead hazards.

Contractor C&E Trenching recently began initial roadway grinding along West Orchard Avenue, forcing a full road closure between Southwest 7th and Southwest 11th streets. The infrastructure upgrade will replace 3,200 feet of undersized water lines with new eight-inch ductile iron pipe. Crews will also replace fire hydrants, valves, and local water service connections.

Traffic disruptions are expected to continue all through the summer, but crews plan to maintain local access for nearby residents and businesses. Officials noted some households may need temporary water services during construction. The project ultimately aims to improve public safety and prevent future line failures.
