WALLA WALLA – City of Walla Walla employees and patrons who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 will not be required to wear face coverings in most city facilities beginning today (Monday). Those who prefer to mask up are welcome to do so.
In addition, city employees who are fully vaccinated will not be required to wear face coverings when they are working outdoors or traveling in a vehicle with other people. They are also not required to maintain six feet of physical distancing.
The updates are based on guidance by the Centers for Disease Control that were then confirmed by Washington Secretary of Health Umair Shah.
Masks can be required by still-standing local, federal, state, tribal, or territorial rules, laws and regulations. In addition, local businesses and workplaces are also allowed to set their own mask guidelines.
City officials may modify the guidelines in the future as more knowledge is gained by health officials.
There are exceptions to the city’s new guidelines:
Library patrons and employees will continue to wear masks since the Walla Walla Public Library also serves those younger than 12, who are currently not eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations.
Fully-vaccinated fire department personnel will not be required to wear masks when responding to fire calls. For medical calls, crew members will continue to wear personal protective equipment regardless of their vaccination status. They type of call and presence of COVID-19 symptoms dictates the level of PPE required.
Walla Walla Police Department personnel will follow the updated city guidelines. For recreational programs held indoors that include participants younger than 12 years old, staff and participants will be required to wear masks regardless of their vaccination status.
