WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council meets at 6:30 p.m. today (Wednesday). The council will vote on a resolution authorizing a grant application to the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office for improvements at Fort Walla Walla Park.

The grant application is for $100,000 and no matching funds are required as part of this grant.

The Washington Recreation and Conservation Office is providing a grant opportunity for deferred maintenance of local park facilities and infrastructure. City staff has submitted a request for the maximum level of funding of $100,000 to improve the internal roads, parking areas and paved trails at Fort Walla Walla Park. The scope of the project is to overlay approximately 50,000 square feet of asphalt within the park.

Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman said the roads, parking areas and trails need repair, and an asphalt overlay will provide a much-needed improvement to these heavily used areas. The resolution must be passed by the city council before Oct. 31 to be eligible to receive funding. If the city is awarded the grant, staff expect the work to be completed next year.

The meeting is in the council chambers at Walla Walla City Hall. It is also live streamed on the city’s website at https://www.wallawallawa.com/government/city-council.
