PENDLETON – McKay Creek flooded in 2019 and the Umatilla River flooded in 2020. The city of Pendleton is appealing refusals by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to pay for some of the expenses the city incurred during those floods.
“The bureaucracy of the process continues and will continue for some time, but I want everybody to know we’re committed to working through it for the betterment of the community and the taxpayers,” Pendleton City Manager Robb Corbett said.
One of the largest efforts underway right now is an analysis of the McKay Creek Basin. The federally-funded study is about three months along and is expected to last a year. Corbett said the study will help identify projects that could make things safer for those living around lower McKay Creek.
“We think they’re going to be expensive,” he said. “The next step will be to go out and get those funded, probably through our congressional delegation.”
