WALLA WALLA – The final curtain is coming down at the China Pavilion at Walla Walla Community College. The building, which was moved to the Walla Walla campus in 1975 following Spokane’s world’s fair, is at the end of its lifespan.
“The building has served WWCC well and is a beloved piece of our community, but its age and upkeep mean that the structure is no longer viable for its original purpose from a facilities purpose,” Marketing and Communications Director Karl Easttorp said.
Easttorp said the China Pavilion needs such things as a new roof, fire system and a new heating and cooling system.
The Republic of China’s pavilion was owned at the time by both the Taiwan government and Expo ’74. While the college has not established a date for demolition of the China Pavilion, Easttorp said the college’s drama and music programs are being moved to the Health Sciences and Performing Arts building that was constructed for this purpose in 2007.
The Health Sciences and Performing Arts building is home to the 300-seat performing arts center which hosts events, concerts, plays and forums for the college and community.
“We are investing in a few modifications to ensure that our performing arts programs have what they need to make this beautiful their new home,” Easttorp said.
