PENDLETON – Awards were handed out at the Pendleton Chamber of Commerce First Citizens Banquet Friday night. However, one award was not included in the information released by the Chamber.

Hill Meat Company Chief Executive Officer and Owner Jim Cheney was awarded the President’s Award. Chamber President Brooke Armstrong of Pendleton Underground Tours said the award is for a person who goes above and beyond to help both the Chamber of Commerce and the community.

Cheney bought Hill Meat in 1992 and made changes in its production, focusing only on pork products. He has been praised by trade organizations for his insight and commitment to quality. He has more than 140 employees.

That’s not all. Cheney is a member of the Round-Up City Development Corporation and the Progress Board. At a request from Armstrong, he agreed to buy a bucking pig for special events, and she said he even drove to pick up the pig which has become a beloved attraction. In the last year alone, Hill Meat and Cheney were involved in supporting more than 45 special events for nonprofit agencies and school groups in Pendleton.
