GRANT, BAKER, UNION, & WALLOWA COUNTIES – Living with chronic pain can hamper the lifestyles of many older Eastern Oregonians. Folks often struggle with managing frustration, fatigue, and isolation on top of the pain.
Community Connection of Northeast Oregon is offering a free online workshop to residents who are 60 and older, living in Baker, Grant, Union, and Wallowa counties. The program is called Living Well: Chronic Disease Self-Management. The program is made possible through the Older Americans Act.
CCNO Senior Services Manager Kathy Ganung is spearheading the workshop and says she herself struggles with chronic pain. She felt this was an appropriate time of the year to offer the class, since chores seem to increase in the spring:
“Empowering them to self-advocate, that’s an important piece. We still want to do all the fun, and needed chores that are always there, especially in springtime. I thought this was a great class to offer now, because I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be out there pulling more weeds than I want. Pacing yourself is the key.”
The free workshop covers topics like exercising at one’s own level, using medications appropriately, improving nutrition, evaluating new treatments, and communicating effectively with healthcare providers and loved ones.
Ganung said participants need to register by April 14th. The class will be conducted via Zoom, beginning April 17th. To register, visit https://ccno.org/living-well-chronic-disease.
