Cavan arraignment Thursday afternoon on murder charge

CANYON CITY – Following the capture yesterday of the man being charged in the murder of Janelle Klaar, Grant County District Attorney Jim Carpenter has provided a brief update to our newsroom. DA Carpenter stated that the prosecution is still working on final charges. Gary Cavan is set to be arraigned this afternoon at 1 p.m. on a charge of Murder in the 2nd Degree. Carpenter said, “However, in the coming days, the State will be proceeding to a grand jury, and there will likely be additional charges coming.”
The DA mentioned that information continues to pour in on the case, and the investigation is far from complete. The maximum sentence in Oregon for second-degree murder is life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. We’ll provide updates as they come in.
