UMATILLA COUNTY – Canal Road isn’t right. Umatilla County Public Works Director Tom Fellows says his department has determined a portion of the road, also known as County Road No. 1179, follows a course that does not agree with existing records. Fellows added that some of the records are missing or lost.

“They requested that the board set a hearing to determine if the road can be legalized where it actually sits instead of where they said it was sitting,” Umatilla County Board of Commissioners Chairman John Shafer said.

The portion of the road in question is between Highway 395 and a point that lies about 500 feet north of Feedville Road. Fellows reports that records for Feedville Road (County Road No. 1000F) cannot be found. The problem was discovered as Canal Road is now being prepared for a road improvement project.

Shafer said there is no plan to remove Canal Road form its actual course. “Canal Road is going to stay right where it is,” he said. “It’s just going to be legal.”
