PENDLETON – Pendleton’s new police chief doesn’t have a set management style because a manager isn’t what’s needed. Chuck Byram said a leader is what’s needed if you hire the right people.
“You need somebody that’s motivated,” he said. “Somebody that wants to do the job. Somebody that’s willing to do the right thing for the right reason even when it’s hard. Those are people that want to be led, not the people that need to be managed.”
Byram adds that management will be needed at times when mistakes are made.
“There are instances, obviously, where people make mistakes,” he said. “Then you have to take on that management role. But, for the most part, if you lead by example and you give them the tools to do the job, they will perform at the high level that we expect them to.”
