PENDLETON – There are rules for those renting Bird scooters in the city, but many people say they aren’t being observed. Police Chief Chuck Byram worries that someone will get hurt and urges scooter renters to obey them.

“Wear your helmet,” he said. “Stay off the sidewalks. Sidewalks are for pedestrians and people in wheelchairs. You can’t be scooting around on those scooters on the sidewalk.”

Byram said what’s even more concerning is people hopping on scooters during Round-Up week. He’s already working on trying to ensure that the scooters are all put away at a certain time.

“The last thing that we want is a bunch of people rolling out of Goldie’s at midnight and heading down to the Rainbow and saying, ‘Oh, there’s a scooter there, might as well make it a quick ride.’ We can only imagine that bad things would happen.”

Byram said that anyone operating transportation – whether it’s a scooter, a bicycle, or even a horse – can be charged with driving under the influence.
