PENDLETON – The Westward Ho! Parade begins at 10 a.m. today (Friday). That, of course, is followed by the rodeo at 1:15, Happy Canyon in the evening, and the events along Main Street into the wee hours.
Pendleton Police Chief Chuck Byram says the best advice he can offer to help people have fun while staying out of trouble is to pace themselves.
“It’s a marathon of a week,” he said. “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. It’s not like Whisky Fest where it’s just basically two nights and done. This thing goes on from starting on Saturday (Sept. 7) until Sunday (Sept. 15) when people are leaving town.”
Byram said that Sunday is actually a busy day for his department.
“Quite frankly, Sunday is one of our busier days because that’s when people hold everything that they’ve been wanting to report to us until then. So we have a lot of thefts. We have a lot of traffic congestion, so we have a lot of traffic accidents.”
Byram had one wish as the week draws to an end. “I would just ask that people be patient, be kind, and know that we are out there trying to do our best for them,” he said.
