PENDLETON – Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus reports that William Harvey Butcher III, 29, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the beating death of Daniel Self in June of last year.
Self was found badly beaten at Trailhead Park on Westgate Place early on June 23. Butcher was arrested at the scene. The victim died from his injuries at St. Anthony Hospital. Primus said Butcher had beaten Self severely with the “backside of a hatchet.”
Primus said that Butcher has been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.
“He does have the right to apply for parole in 25 years, but that is the maximum penalty for a murder in the second degree charge,” Primus said.
