PENDLETON โ€“ The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for the foothills of the Blue Mountains in Oregon and Washington as well as the Yakima and Kittitas valleys. It goes into effect late tonight (Monday) through Tuesday morning.

The area includes the cities of Pendleton, Hermiston, Athena, Boardman, Pilot Rock, and Ione in Oregon. It also will impact Dayton, Walla Walla, Yakima, Prosser, Waitsburg, and Ellensburg in Washington.

Temperatures as low as 28 degrees are considered likely. The frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. The cold could also impact unprotected outdoor plumbing. The low temperatures are considered most likely in cold-prone valleys and areas that are sheltered from the wind.

The National Weather Service advises gardeners to take steps now to protect tender plants.
