WALLA WALLA – The new concrete slab recently poured for the bridge replacement project at the intersection of Rose Street and Third Avenue is now standing on its own. All shoring, which provides temporary support until the concrete reaches its design strength, has been released from the bridge and the contractor, Nelson Construction, is working on completely removing all other shoring from the Mill Creek channel.

On Tuesday, crews installed the waterproofing membrane on top of the bridge slab to protect it from water and road salt penetrating the concrete and rebar. The contractor is working on excavating the subgrade to build back up the new roadway sections and is in the process of testing the two new water main sections.

Next week the contractor will be installing the new concrete curb, gutter and, if time allows sidewalks both on the bridge and adjacent the bridge.

“They are hoping to have the project paved in the next two weeks,” Project Manager Johnny LeMaster said.

Construction of the $4.1 million project began in May and should be completed by the end of this month, pending asphalt availability.

“All of the asphalt from the subcontractor’s plant is currently going to the Highway 12 expansion,” LeMaster said. “They do believe they will be able to pave in the next couple weeks, but if weather and supply do not cooperate it could be delayed a little.”
