LA GRANDE – Island City Principal Brett Smith has been named the 2027 Oregon Elementary Principal of the Year. The announcement was made last night in front of Smith’s colleagues and family at Island City Elementary.
When asked to speak after the announcement Smith said, “I don’t really have a lot to say, I usually talk a lot and right now I am kind of just in shock, so thank you… Thank you for the nomination and thank you for the trust”
The following press release on the award has been issued by the La Grande School District.
Brett Smith, principal of Island City Elementary School in the La Grande School District, has been named the 2027 Oregon Elementary Principal of the Year by the Oregon Principals Association, part of the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA). The honor was announced October 21 in a surprise celebration.
This statewide recognition celebrates Smith’s commitment to student learning, strong relationships, a positive school culture, and sustained academic improvement. Since becoming principal seven years ago, Smith has worked alongside staff and families to strengthen student engagement and belonging.
One notable achievement is the school’s growth in regular attendance, which rose from 66.7% in 2021–22 to 88.3% in 2025–26— surpassing its pre-pandemic level. The school’s efforts have included strong family outreach, Data use aligned to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), implementation of cross-grade student houses, and numerous improvements to playgrounds and walking paths through collaboration with staff members, community businesses and through the Island City Elementary parent teacher organization.
“Brett represents the very best of school leadership. He leads with care, builds meaningful relationships, supports his staff, and keeps student learning and success at the center of every decision. We are incredibly proud of Brett and the entire Island City Elementary team,” said La Grande School District Superintendent George Mendoza.
Colleagues describe Smith as a caring, dedicated principal who knows students personally, builds strong relationships with families, and connects children with needed resources. Whether celebrating attendance goals with pancakes or participating in school traditions, he brings joy to the school experience and helps students and staff feel welcomed and valued. His leadership has strengthened attendance, engagement, and belonging at Island City Elementary. This prestigious award recognizes his commitment to students, educators, and the community.
Smith will be formally recognized at the COSA Law Conference in December 2026.
