OLYMPIA – Washington Senate Republican leader John Braun is calling for a special legislative session to consider suspending the 49-cent per gallon gas tax. With inflation at a 40-year high, Braun said now is the time to suspend the tax through the end of the year.
“Working families around the state are having trouble affording to live in our state,” he said. “It’s the right thing to do for people around the state and the sooner we do it the better.”
Braun said all it would take is a one-day, remote special session to set aside the state gas tax. As for the financial impact if the state gas tax is suspended, Braun said a new economic forecast indicates state-revenue is running more than $255 million above what was projected in February.
