PENDLETON – Blue Mountain Community College is looking at adding more sports to its athletic department. The college recently announced it plans to begin men’s and women’s golf in 2024. President Mark Browning says the college is also looking to add wrestling.
“We’re trying to make that happen,” he said. “We’ve got to do some things with facilities, but there is a big demand for wrestling, both men’s and women’s.”
Browning said that it’s important to provide as many sporting opportunities as possible for those young people who might not make the major conference teams but still have passion and developable skills.
“The biggest thing is that it provides an opportunity for the student,” he said. “These are students who wouldn’t be coming to us otherwise. That’s what we’re looking at.”
As for the golf teams, Browning said as soon as a coach is hired, he or she will begin recruiting athletes. That person will coach both men’s and women’s golfers. Browning said support from Wildhorse Resort & Casino was vital in bringing golf to BMCC.
