HARNEY COUNTY-The BLM began gather operations in southern Oregon as part of our efforts to maintain healthy wild horses on healthy public lands. During operations, an 11-year-old bay stallion ran into a metal fence panel and perished on contact. Our Wild Horse & Burro teams onsite waited until it was safe to separate the other horses and foals from the area. Then, they went in to retrieve the horse.

Our teams take great care in the selection of the gather site and use special handling techniques for wild horses during these gathers—all in pursuit of the safety and welfare of wild horses.

Our on the ground crews are conducting gather operations within full compliance of existing laws and policies (including the Comprehensive Animal Welfare Policy) regarding animal welfare and authorized standard operating procedures for gather operations.

Wild horse gathers are essential to protecting the health of our wild herds and the land they roam. To learn more about our BLM Wild Horse & Burro Program, visit our website: www.blm.gov/whb
