NORTHEAST OREGON — Rep. Bobby Levy is firing back after the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), says it won’t change its policies regarding transgender athletes in high school athletics.

Levy, a Republican who represents House District 58 (which contains all of Union and Wallowa counties and a portion of Umatilla County) recently joined other Oregon women legislators in sending a letter to the OSAA, asking the organization to change its policies after a transgender athlete performed well during girls events at a track meet in Sherwood.

The OSAA responded to the lawmakers letter, saying it would not change its policies on transgender athletes, citing state discrimination laws.

Elkhorn Media Group reached out to Rep. Levy about the OSAA’s response to the letter. Below is her response:

The key here is “protection”. Protection of Title nine, protection of girls sports.  Protection of our female athletes who are being left out of their time to shine in athletics, possible scholarships, medals and recognition of their hard work. It isn’t about exclusion; it’s about preserving fairness and opportunities for female athletes.

What is OSAA and ODE going to do when a male student athlete who identifies as gender fluid wants to play a girls sport during the spring sports season and then plays football during the winter sports season.  Do they shower in the girls locker? Where is the protection of our female athletes?

We are dismantling the Title nine protections for women’s sports because we are intimidated to speak up about an obvious biological reality.  Do males have an obvious physical advantage against females in female sports? That answer is yes.  We can compete with men fairly on an intellectual basis, as in the legislature, but not in sports.  Biology is a truth.

I stand by the letter the Republican House and Senate Women wrote.
