SALEM – Senate Bill 95 has a public hearing before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary this afternoon at 3 p.m. That will add a few judges to the state circuit court system, including one additional judge for Umatilla and Morrow counties.
The proposal was filed at the request of Chief Justice Meagan A. Flynn of the Oregon Supreme Court. It was filed by Senate President Rob Wagner, who has not expressed either advocacy for or opposition to the proposal.
The Sixth Circuit Court, which serves Umatilla and Morrow counties, currently has five judges. If the bill passes, that would increase to six. Adding a sixth judge is supported by Morrow County District Attorney Justin Nelson and others.
The other districts that would see an increase are Clackamas County, which would add to judges to grow to 13 and Douglas County that would increase from five to six. The public hearing is in room HR E. If SB 95 is approved by this committee it will be referred to the Joint Committee on Ways and Means.
