HEPPNER – The Morrow County Grand Jury heard testimony and evidence today (Friday) on the state’s case against Caleb Beehler, 39, in the shooting death of Richard Broadbent last week.
Morrow County District Attorney Justin Nelson said the grand jury returned a true bill indictment charging Beehler with one count of second-degree murder. He was arraigned on that indictment this afternoon in front of Judge Christopher Brauer.
Nelson said that Beehler’s defense attorney, Dean Gushwa, requested additional time before a proof is evident and presumption is strong hearing to allow him time to review the evidence in the case. Brauer kept the no-bail condition on Beehler and scheduled a status hearing for the morning of March 31. Beehler was being sought as a suspect in the shooting on March 9 of Richard Broadbent, 58, who was the suspect’s stepfather. When Morrow County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived, Beehler had left the scene. He turned himself in at the Hermiston Police Department the next day.
