On Sunday the 30th Grant County Deputy Trevar Berry recovered a missing bull elk head in the Canyon City area.

Josh Griffin, of Waco Texas had been hunting first elk season here in Grant County with friend Cub Carpenter.

After taking a bull in a remote area, and having a memorable hunt where Sherri Giffin, Bobbee, Preston and Tim Boethin, and Chad Lauer all got to go in with a donkey and horses to help pack it out, the event became even more memorable. A bear came at night to the Carpenter residence and packed off the head.

A search ensued throughout Friday the 28th , with family and friends trying to locate the trophy rack, but to no avail.

A resident of upper Adams Drive later reported seeing a white pickup with an older male driver stop and load the head up from the roadway near the water tower on Adams on Friday morning.

Deputy Berry then contacted a resident who reported finding the head with coyotes nearby. He had the head and gladly returned it to the Sheriff’s Office where it was then returned to the Carpenters. Griffin had already flown back to Texas.

This was another case of neighbors watching out for their neighbors, helping our communities to be one of the best places to live.
