BCSO warns of “hostage scam” circulating Halfway

HALFWAY — Residents in the Halfway area are asked to beware of what authorities are calling a “disturbing phone call scam” where the caller purports to be part of a cartel, and claim to hold family members hostage. Folks who receive similar calls are asked to report them to the Sheriff’s Office.

Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received several reports of a disturbing phone call scam being received by residents in Halfway.When residents answered the phone, scammers identified themselves as a member of the Mexican Cartel. The caller would then claim they were holding a family member of the resident hostage
