LA GRANDE – (Release from La Grande PD) *All updates are presented below chronologically
La Grande, Oregon – (Release as of 9:38 pm) March 14, 2024 – At approximately 7:40 PM local time, La Grande Police Department dispatch received numerous 911 calls reporting an adult male shooting a rifle from the porch of his residence. Upon arrival, officers were informed that a family member had attempted to disarm the individual, who is believed to be suffering from a mental health disorder. The individual then retreated inside his home, barricading himself within.
As of now, there are no reported injuries. The area has been contained, and an Incident Command Team has been established. To ensure the safety of all involved, the Northeast Oregon Multi-Agency SWAT Team has been activated.
Collaborative efforts from the Oregon State Police, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Union County Emergency Management Director are underway to assist the La Grande Police Department.
We are working diligently to bring this incident to a safe and successful conclusion. We ask for the public’s patience and cooperation during this time. For the safety of all involved, we urge individuals to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.

We have confirmed the barricaded subject is the only person in the home.

We have one adult male safely in custody. No one was hurt during this incident. The scene is now safe and has been turned over the LGPD Investigations Unit.
Update Final
At 10:30 PM, Kim Murphy (70) of La Grande, was arrested without further incident. Murphy was apprehended and booked into the Union County Jail for charges including Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Disorderly Conduct II, and Reckless Endangering. Following the arrest, all police units have successfully cleared the scene, and the investigation has been handed over to Detective Cody Kirby within the LGPD Investigations Section. Additionally, CHD Mental Health Crisis has been duly notified of this incident. We extend our gratitude to our professional partners whose collaboration was instrumental in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. It’s crucial to note that this is an ongoing investigation.
