BAKER CITY — Community members and businesses across Baker City stepped up to help donate food for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
The food drive is part of Mayday, Inc.’s’ “Pack the Pantry” month, held every year to give needed food for survivors of assault and violence. MayDay is a nonprofit that supports survivors, as well as spread awareness to prevent domestic violence.
Every year, Mayday rallies the local community and businesses to see who can “pack the pantry” the most, to give the food drive a competitive edge.
The nonprofit even hands out the Traveling Nest Egg award, complete with a handmade trophy, that’s given to the biggest donor in the Pack the Pantry drive.
According to Mayday, this year’s award was given to St. Alphonsus Medical Center, as they were the top contributor with 223 items. Les Schwabs came in second with 200 items. Marvin’s came in third with 167 items. And rounding it up in fourth place was the Motherlode with 125 items, which also included two boxes of diapers as well.
In total, 980 items were donated, far surpassing last year’s total of 587.
In a Facebook post, Mayday says, “Our Pack the Pantry Month for February was again successful thanks to our community caring for our mission and the survivors we serve. We so appreciate the businesses who participated as drop off locations.
Along with the winners, we want to give a huge shout out to the other participating businesses: Clarke & Clarke, Ryder Brothers, Grocery Outlet, Albertsons, Safeway, Bi-Mart, New Directions, Shameless Tees, Old West, and Baker County Sheriff Office.
