BAKER CITY – Baker School District Superintendent Erin Lair (EL) spoke with Elkhorn Media Group staff (SM) regarding highlights from last week’s Baker School Board Meeting.

(SM) Thank you for joining me, Superintendent Lair. Let’s talk about some highlights from the school board meeting that took place yesterday evening.

(EL) Hi, Shannon. We started out the board meeting recognizing Lucas Metz, a senior at Baker High School, for earning the National Rural and Small Town Award from the College Board National Recognition Program. We’re really proud of Lucas and excited to see the amazing things he does in life.

We also recognized two Promise Students of the Month: Jozellynn Barnett from South Baker Intermediate and Lillian Morris from the Baker Early Learning Center. It’s such a pleasure to hear principals and teachers sing the praises of these amazing students.

There was also an opportunity to thank First Presbyterian Church of Baker City for being an Outstanding Community Partner. Just this week, the gym reopened for use at Baker Middle School. Since the beginning of the school year, while the gym seismic rehabilitation was completed, the church opened their facility across the street from BMS for our use at mealtimes; and we couldn’t be more grateful.

(SM) What a wonderful way to start a board meeting! What other topics were covered at the board meeting that might be of interest to the community?

(EL) The school board voted to move forward with the recommendation from the Construction Manager/General Contractor evaluation committee that CB Const, Inc, of La Grande be selected as the CM/GC for remaining bond projects.

During our work session, we also talked about my goals as Superintendent for this school year.

First of all, I want to help create a positive culture of support and visibility throughout the district; and I plan to be in all of our schools at least once per month and attend at least one athletic and one non-athletic activity each month that scheduled activities exist.

By the end of the school year, I also want the district administrative team to have a shared vision and three year plan for professional development across all our employee groups.

The third goal we discussed centers on effective budget processes. By the end of the school year, in coordination with our CFO, the district will have a comprehensive budget process that includes forecasting, effective presentation, and strategic planning across all our K-12 and enterprise program.

(SM) Thank you Superintendent Lair for joining me and for letting out listeners know about this recent board meeting.
