BAKER CITY- Baker School District Superintendent Erin Lair sat down with Elkhorn Media Group Staff to discuss highlight from last week’s Baker School District Board Meeting.
(EMG) Thank you for joining me, Superintendent Lair. Let’s talk about some highlights from the school board meeting that took place earlier today.
(EL) Hi, Shannon. Our school board decided to come together in December, despite traditionally not meeting this month, in order to share a work session and cover some important items during an abbreviated meeting.
During our work session, we heard from representatives of the Oregon School Boards Association and discussed statewide legislative issues and how they specifically apply to Baker School District.
We also discussed the results of a recent survey that went out to staff, school families, and the greater community to help determine budget priorities for this next budget season. There was a strong desire expressed to keep all student and school-based programs in tact, as well as a desire to bolster mental health supports if extra funds are available. We plan to take this information back to our students and community in the near future for further input ahead of Budget Committee meetings.
During our regular board meeting, the board voted to use previously budgeted funds to expand the playground at the Baker Early Learning Center. The playground will be designed for accessibility and inclusivity – with sensory-friendly items, encouraging spread out play, and designed for children of all abilities.
(EMG) That’s great! Is there anything else you’d like to share with us today?
(EL) We would just like to wish our entire community Happy Holidays!
