Baker County Update: Budgeting, Legislation, and Rural Healthcare

BAKER COUNTY – Baker County is kicking off 2026 with a focus on fiscal responsibility and legislative advocacy as the Board of Commissioners dives into budget season. Baker County Commission Chair Shane Alderson recently sat down with Elkhorn Media Group to discuss updates on what commissioners are working on.

Commissioner Alderson noted that Commissioner Kaseberg has taken on the role of budget officer this year, allowing Alderson to focus on other priorities while still remaining involved in the broader financial oversight.

Simultaneously, the commission is closely monitoring the Oregon State Legislature’s upcoming short session. Following a recent town hall with Representative Mark Owens and Senator Todd Nash, several key issues for Eastern Oregon have come to the forefront. These include ongoing concerns regarding housing, water, and land use.

A significant priority for Commissioner Alderson is the advancement of rural healthcare through the Rural Transformation Act. This initiative recently secured $197 million in funding for Oregon, an amount nearly equal to the total state request. These funds are set to be allocated to rural hospitals across the state to address urgent medical needs and develop long-term healthcare solutions. The Oregon Health Authority is expected to release the formal application requirements soon, at which point local hospitals will submit proposals detailing their strategic plans for utilizing the funds.

On a local level, the county along with community citizens, are discussing the possibility of renovating the war memorial located in front of the Baker County Courthouse. An ad hoc committee is being formed to lead the design and fundraising efforts, ensuring the memorial better reflects the community’s respect for those who served.

Commissioner Alderson emphasized his desire for more community interaction, encouraging residents to visit the county office or reach out via the county website and social media. He can be contacted directly at salderson@bakercountyor.gov
