On the morning of January 6th, 2024, Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a request for a welfare check at a camp near the top of Dooley Mountain. The night prior, two individuals, Christopher Huckstep and Zachariah Hensen, were packing items from their trailers located off Forest Road 11 to a vehicle approximately one mile away. Huckstep did not return to the vehicle as planned.

Two Baker County Search and Rescue volunteers and a BCSO deputy responded to the area. As they made their way to the trailer in a tracked side-by-side, they encountered nearly 6-foot snowdrifts and had to walk part of the way in. Huckstep was located safely. Rather than continuing to the vehicle as planned, he returned to the trailer where he stayed overnight. SAR volunteers transported him back to the vehicle.

BCSO is grateful for our Search and Rescue volunteers.
