BAKER COUNTY — Ice fisherman—Baker County Parks have recently shared helpful information regarding the thickness of ice, and how safe it is to go out on it. The agency says firstly, “Ice is never 100% safe, especially in areas where water levels fluctuate or if there is a current.”
For those venturing out on foot, the minimum guideline for walking or standing on new, clear ice is 4-inches thick. The ice needs to be 5-to-7 inches thick to hold up a snowmobile, 8-to-12 inches for a small car, and 12-to-15 inches thick to safely drive out in a pickup truck. Remember to check the ice thickness before you venture out.
