BAKER COUNTY – (Press Release from Baker County Sheriff’s Office)
In the late evening hours of April 21st, first responders were dispatched to a residence on Eagle Creek Road in New Bridge for a report of a tree that fell on a house. The occupant noted that she could also smell smoke but did not see flames.
While responders were enroute, the occupant was able to vacate the home with her pets.
When responders arrived, flames were visible from the residence, with high winds increasing the complexity of the situation. Crews from Eagle Valley Fire, Pine Valley Rural Fire, and Keating Rural Fire quickly got to work.
The occupant notified emergency responders that there was a possibility dynamite was stored in the cellar. Boxes of blasting caps and other explosive ordinance components were discovered in the root cellar after the fire was extinguished. The Oregon State Police Explosives Unit was notified and responded to the scene. Technicians removed and safely disposed of the materials. No injuries were sustained during this operation.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Responding agencies included Eagle Valley Fire, Pine Valley Rural Fire, Keating Rural Fire Protection District , Oregon State Police , Idaho Power and Baker County Sheriff’s Office. Eagle Valley Ambulance was placed on standby.
