BAKER COUNTY – (Release from the Baker County Historical Society) The Baker County Historical Society (BCHS) would like to invite interested individuals to come the first meeting of the year to learn about committee opportunities on January 17, 2023, at 4:00 PM at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center at 2020 Auburn Ave in the downstairs studio.
The Baker County Historical Society is a volunteer lead organization of people interested in the History of Baker County. Some of the current officers need to step into other projects for BCHS and more volunteers are needed to fill the gaps in our services and expand history programs.
Committees who need volunteers include membership, newsletter, and programs. The BCHS is the caretaker of the Chinese Cemetery in Baker City, and an entire committee needs to be put together including individuals with native plant species/invasive species, researchers, landscape, and individuals interested in helping with general maintenance issues with the Cemetery. “The Historical Society has now done planning with the Oregon Consolidated Chinese Benevolent Society, the owners of the cemetery and as caretakers we need to work with them to do more than weed control. We need to look at the whole project including the interpretation of this critical historic site and bring experts volunteering to help us build a plan for long-term care. We are fortunate to have resources to do this work but need a committee to help organize the plans. The winter is a perfect time to do pre-planning.” Ginger Savage, BCHS President.
“We need to recruit new volunteers to help with building the Historical Society programs and we really have a lot of fun doing it. Anyone interested is suggested to come and see and meet the governing committee and consider joining us.” Stated Savage
