BAKER CITY – Baker County District Attorney Greg Baxter has issued a follow up to last week’s announcement of increased patrols ahead of Baker High School’s Prom.

A letter from Baxter can be seen below:

I wanted to thank everyone for helping to keep baker county safe during the prom weekend. Law-enforcement stayed very busy patrolling the streets, chatting with kids, responding to noise complaints, and other general small-town stuff.

We were all grateful that there was nothing big that happened. Also, thank you ODOT, the Juvenile Department and all of law enforcement for participating.

We do not have stats that show if things changed this weekend. But we know of a lot of kids who typically have been involved in drinking and partying, who were sober when we interacted with them. I don’t know what happened after I went to bed, but I was proud of the kids for how they handled themselves while I was out there. Ultimately, no one was injured or killed on the roads.

There are two things that we would like the community to know and consider. First, we won’t be able to do this type of event every weekend. We will have graduation, Miner’s Jubilee, rodeos and other school dances. Sometimes we will have a large law-enforcement presence and other times we may not. We also may not announce when we intend to flood the community with law-enforcement members. No matter what happens our goal is to deter kids from making bad choices. Second, this last week I went into the school with some of our community partners to talk about alcohol. We had an open and honest conversation. Many kids reported some interesting things about their parents’ views on teenage drinking. We would strongly encourage everyone to teach their kids about the choices of their actions. Overall, it was a great weekend.

We appreciate everyone, especially the teenagers, stepping up to keep our community safe.
