BAKER COUNTY — Baker County has miles and miles of rural roads, and encountering farm or agricultural equipment is a fairly common occurrence.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) wants to remind all drivers to be mindful and think safety first when encountering agricultural equipment on local roads and highways.

The Sheriff’s Office says law enforcement has already received complaints about unsafe driving by passenger vehicles when they encounter agricultural equipment traveling on the highway.

“We encourage drivers to pay attention, be respectful and share the road,” says Ashley McClay, Public Information Officer for the BCSO. “Driving behind a piece of farm equipment for several miles may add a few minutes to your commute, but being patient can save lives. At the end of the day, we want everyone to get home safely.”

Follow these tips when encountering agricultural equipment on the highway:

  • Pass carefully: Ensure that you are in an authorized passing zone.
  • Watch for hand signals: Drivers may need to make wide left turns. If the equipment veers to the right, don’t assume they are allowing you to pass. Watch the cab for hand signals from the driver. He/she may be preparing for a left-hand turn.
  • Wide load: Pay attention to the distance needed to safely clear the equipment when passing.
  • Some equipment may be wider than the road lanes. Look for flashing lights or reflective tape marking the edges.
