BAKER CITY – (Release from Baker City) The Baker City Police Department in cooperation with the Baker County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police are excited to announce the return of our Shop with a Cop program.   This year’s event will be held on December 8, 2023.

Shop with a Cop is a nationally known program throughout the United States.  It provides an opportunity for law enforcement officers to engage young people in a positive environment and helps build relations with community members that are unable to afford holiday gifts due to financial restraints.

Locally, the Shop with a Cop program pairs underprivileged and at-risk youth ages 6-10 with a law enforcement officer for a shopping spree leading up to Christmas.  The hope is that this experience of shopping for Christmas gifts with law enforcement officers will instill a positive experience in each child which will carry into their adolescence and adulthood.  Children are chosen in cooperation with our School Resource Officers, counselors, and teachers at our elementary institutions within the Baker 5J School District.

Local law enforcement needs your help.  We are raising money needed to make this a successful event for our youth. If you willing and able to donate to this valuable program, please contact Sergeant Wayne Chastain at the Baker City Police Department, Deputy Gabe Maldonado at the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, or Lieutenant Mandy Wirth at the Baker County Dispatch Center.
