Baker City Safeway will close its doors on or before May 25, 2025.
Update: Since the official confirmation from Corporate Safeway, of their intent to closure the Baker City Safeway location next month, a representative has answered a few questions brought up as concerns by local citizens.

For several years now, Safeway and Albertsons have been owned by the same parent company. Having two stores in close proximity to each other has caused questions over the years by citizens as to whether or not one would eventually close down.
When asked about the closure, a corporate representative for Safeway said, “The Portland Division of Safeway Albertsons announced plans to close one of its Baker City Safeway. The store is expected to close on or before Sunday, May 25th, 2025. Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating the performance of our stores. Closing an underperforming store is always a tough decision, but we are focused on growing our business by being the favorite local supermarket, and running great stores where people love to shop. That’s what will enable us to offer the products and services our customers value most in this market.”
Other questions asked to the corporate representative include
1- Is Albertsons in jeopardy of closing?
2- Are rumors regarding the current Safeway location being used as a warehouse for Albertsons true?
3- Is there room at the current Albertsons for those who will no longer have a job at the Safeway location?
At this time, questions 1-3 have not been answered.
Citizens have expressed concern to Elkhorn Media Group staff about the closure of yet another Pharmacy in Baker City.
Currently, Albertsons and Rite-Aid both have pharmacies in operation. Bi-Mart closed their Baker City Pharmacy, along with other Bi-Mart locations, in 2021.
