BAKER CITY — The Baker City Police Department is issuing a warning about a scam circulating on Facebook Marketplace.
The department recently posted the advisory on its Facebook page:
** Warning: Facebook Marketplace Scam Alert! **
Dear Community Members,
We want to bring your attention to a Facebook Marketplace scam that has been reported involving an address on Petry Lane selling a motorcycle.
Here are some red flags to look out for:
1. Too Good to Be True Deals: Scammers often lure victims with unbelievably low prices for high-demand items. Be cautious if the deal seems too good to be true.
2. Urgency and Pressure Tactics: Scammers may use urgency and pressure tactics to rush you into making a decision. Be wary if the seller insists on a quick transaction without allowing you time to think.
3. Unusual Payment Methods: Be cautious if the seller requests payment through unconventional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. Legitimate sellers typically use secure and standard payment methods.
4. Inability to Meet in Person: Scammers may avoid meeting in person by providing various excuses. Always insist on meeting in a public place, especially if the deal involves a physical exchange.
5. Check the Seller’s Profile: Look at the seller’s profile for signs of legitimacy. A lack of details, recent activity, or a brand-new account may be red flags.
Elkhorn Media Group has reached out to the department for more information on this scam and if any Baker resident has fallen victim to it.
