OREGON – (Information from the Oregon Department of Emergency Management) Summertime means sun, fun and uncomfortably high temperatures. While heat and sweat are simply symptoms of the season, there are actual symptoms that can indicate heat exhaustion and potentially heat stroke. The Oregon Department of Emergency Management has some advice on recognizing and treating heat related illnesses.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Dizziness
  • Thirstiness
  • Heavy sweating
  • Feelings of nausea
  • Feelings of weakness

In the event of heat exhaustion:

  • Move to a colder area
  • Loosen clothing if possible
  • Sip cool water
  • Seek medical aid if symptoms don’t improve

Symptoms of heat stroke include:

  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness

If you notice someone suffering from heat stroke

  • Call 911 Immediately
  • Move the person to a colder area
  • Loosen their clothing and remove extra layers if possible
  • Cool them down with water or ice

Remember that heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which, as stated by the OEM, “can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given.
