ATHENA — Young patrons at the Athena Public Library have expanded access to audiobooks following a $5,000 grant from the Roundhouse Foundation.
The funds, awarded to the Athena Library Friends Association, enabled the library to add more than 50 new titles to its collection of Playaways — standalone audiobook devices that do not require personal smartphones or reading apps. The grant also covers batteries, earbuds, and auxiliary cords for car listening.
Library officials said the expansion focuses on children and teenagers who lack personal devices or struggle with traditional reading.
“Having access to audio devices has introduced me to different genres and created a joy for reading,” said community member River Dennett, adding that the devices benefit youth across the local community.
The Roundhouse Foundation is a private family foundation based in Sisters, Oregon that supports creative solutions to the unique challenges associated with rural culture and the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
