Ashlyn Dalton of BHS wins 9th in the nation for VOD speech

BAKER CITY — A winning speech has gotten Baker High School student Ashlyn Dalton national recognition through the Voice of Democracy speech program. According to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Voice of Democracy is a premier scholarship program that began in 1947. Currently, around 25,000 high school students compete for over One Million Dollars in scholarships on a national level.

Ashlyn Dalton, representing Baker High School and Post 3048 in Baker City, won First Place in the state competition.

Other winners from Oregon include:

Second Place: Emily Krauss, Pleasant Hill HS, representing Post 4039 in Creswell

Third Place: Tommy Biggs, Klamath Union HS, representing Post1383 in Klamath Falls

Fourth Place: Noah Polen, North Valley HS, representing Post 2302 in Grants Pass

Fifth Place: Grant Cynor-Ford, Sam Barlow HS, representing Post 180 in Gresham 

Moving on to nationals on March 3rd, it was announced that Dalton received 9th place in the entire country.

The VFW reports that, “Each year the in-coming National Commander determines the patriotic topics for the high school VOD speech program and for the middle school Patriot’s Pen essay program.”
