UMATILLA – Umatilla City Councilwoman Ashley Wheeler has resigned, leaving a vacancy on the council.
During roll call at the beginning of Tuesday’s meeting, when Wheeler’s name was called there was a silence followed by Mayor Caden Sipe stating, “No longer part of the council.” He stated later in discussion that there was a vacancy, and that “it happened yesterday (Monday)”.
The agenda was then amended to include consideration of Wheeler’s resignation, the council later voted to accept it.
Sipe mentioned that he was sad to see Wheeler go and wished her well on her “new adventure in Idaho.”
The council decided to interview applicants for the vacant seat at the July 1 meeting that will start an hour earlier at 6:00 p.m. The interview process will take place towards the end of the meeting. A subcommittee consisting of Sipe, council president Daren Dufloth and councilman Bruce McLane was organized to come up with questions that will be asked to applicants during the interview process.
