As cold sets in, use heating options safely, CHD and Union remind

UNION COUNTY – Heavy winter weather may be taking its time this season, but Eastern Oregon is still more than cold enough to warrant constant home heating. While most residents and homeowners are likely more than familiar with the safe operation of their home heating system, a reminder on the basics hurts far less than an uncontrolled house fire. Both the Center for Human Development in La Grande and city of Union recently issued some critical reminders on winter heating safety.

 As reminded by the CHD:

  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn
  • Plug heaters directly into wall outlets — never use extension cords or power strips
  • Turn heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed
  • Use heaters with an automatic shut-off feature
  • Have furnaces and chimneys inspected before heavy winter use
  • Install and test smoke & CO alarms monthly

For anyone specifically using woodstoves this season, be mindful when disposing of ashes. The city of Union reminds its residents that ashes should be stored in an outdoor metal container away from any other structures or flammable material. Ashes should only be disposed of in a normal trash can once they are completely cold. Throwing ashes in the trash too early or storing them improperly could easily spark a fire from residual heat.
