Arrests made in multiple vehicle thefts

During the morning hours of January 28th, The Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of multiple car prowls in the Bridge and 2nd Street areas of John Day.

Deputies then responded to a stolen car in Mt. Vernon. The suspect, Christopher Ryan Hoppe, 38 of Lower Yard Road, was reported as being armed with a machete, was taken into custody after being subdued by the use of a “Pepperball” gun.

Hoppe was transported to the Grant County Jail on charges of Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle, Disorderly Conduct, and a Probation Violation.

Sometime in the late hours of the 25th, a car was stolen in John Day on West Main, and a vehicle was prowled with contents of a purse taken.

This vehicle and the separate stolen items were recovered in Spokane Washington near 10:00 am on the 27th. The suspect, Jerod Millard, 36, reportedly from Albuquerque New Mexico, was taken into custody by Kalispel Tribal Police, and lodged in the Spokane County Jail.

Sheriff McKinley would ask that residents please secure their vehicles and remove valuables from them to make themselves less of a target for thieves.
