MULTNOMAH COUNTY – The Oregon State Police reports that Gorgonio Reyes Barrera, 31, of Hermiston lost his life in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 84 near milepost 23 Saturday morning.
OSP says that the car Barrera was driving was westbound on the interstate when it left the lane of travel at a high rate of speed. The Mercury Cougar went through a guardrail and down a 150-foot embankment where it landed upside down in the Columbia River. First responders removed Barrera from the vehicle and attempted life-saving measures, but were not successful. He was declared deceased at the scene.
A viewpoint where the crash occurred was closed for approximately five hours while OSP investigated the scene. Interstate traffic was not impacted.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the Multnomah County Medical Examiner, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
