PENDLETON – The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued an excessive heat watch for a large portion of the Pacific Northwest beginning this morning (Thursday) and reaching all the way through Saturday evening. Afternoon highs are expected to be between 98 and 107 degrees.
The areas impacted by the watch are portions of central, south central, and southeast Washington as well as central, north central and northeast Oregon. Cities in the area include Pendleton, Hermiston, Walla Walla, Boardman, The Dalles, Bend, Ellensburg, Yakima, and the Tri-Cities.
The heat watch is also issued for the Portland metro area and the Willamette Valley. Daytime highs are expected to range from the mid-90s to 100 degrees. The hottest day is expected to be Friday.
The extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses. People are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in an air-conditioned building if possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
