American Legion Kruse Post 72 organizing oratorical scholarship contest

ENTERPRISE โ€“ Kruse Post 72 of the American Legion in Wallowa is organizing an oratorical scholarship contest for local students on December 14. Hosted at the St. Katherines Catholic Church in Enterprise from 10:00 to 12:30 p.m., this contest offers a $500 dollar scholarship to 9th-12th grade high school students. The topic of the oration is the U.S. constitution and will be covered in two parts. In part 1, students will choose any aspect of the constitution to write a 5-minute speech about. In the second part, one of four constitutional amendments will be chosen, and the student will be required to create a three minute oration.

There will be national high school oratorical scholarship contest for 2024 -2025 scheduled for 14 December 2024 from 10am to 12:30 pm at St. Katherines catholic church

Locally Kruse post 72 will be offering $500.00 scholarship donation.  Please contact us for the application and instructions.

A student in grades 9th to 12th high school can participate while in each grade. That means up to four times.

The student will choose any topic of the U.S. constitution to write a speech about. This oral and written speech can be on any aspect of our constitution. Their oration can last up to five minutes.

The 2nd part of the contest is a series of the following topics. One of these topics will be drawn at the contest. The oration is 3 minutes on this part of the contest.

The topics are:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment VII

In suits of common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

Amendment XVIII

Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors with, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.

Section 2. The congress and the several states shall have concurrent power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Section 3.  This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the constitution by legislature of the several states, as provided in the constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission thereof to the states by the congress.

Amendment XXVI

Section 1.  The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of age.

Section 2. The congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

A contestant will chose one of these topics and write a speech.  The contestant will have to give his/her oral speech with five minutes.

Kruse post 72 will present the winning student with a $500.00 scholarship award which is to be used for any state of Oregon approved institute of higher learning.

The contest on behalf of Kruse post 72 will be hosted by st. Katherines catholic church, father Thomas.

1st prize is $3,500 – oratorical gold medal and 1st place certificate

2nd prize is $2, 500 – oratorical silver medal and 2nd place certificate

3rd prize is 2,500 – oratorical bronze medal and 3rd place certificate

All other awards are bronze medal and participation certificates.

National contest will be in May 2025 the dates to be announced.

The national awards:

1st place         $25,000.00

2nd place        $22,500.00 

 3rd place        $20,000.00
