The American Legion Department of Oregon will be conducting its Spring department executive committee meeting and activities in John Day on April 20-21, 2024.
On Saturday morning, April 20th, the public is cordially invited to join with the local veteran community in participating in a “Be the One” walk, followed by an informal meet-and-greet with local leaders at American Legion Tracy Ellis Post 77 in John Day; coffee and pastries will be available following the walk.
A top priority of The American Legion is to bring an end to veteran suicide. “Be the One” is the national initiative undertaken by the Legion to help destigmatize asking for mental health help. The walk slated for John Day is undertaken to help increase awareness and visibility of the initiative with local citizens. The walk is intended to be low impact and will loop through the downtown area, beginning and ending at Tracy Ellis Post 77 in John Day. Those interested in participating in the walk and meet-and-greet should meet at Ellis Tracy Post 77, 176 SE Dayton St, John Day, OR 97845 at 8:45 am, Saturday, April 20th; participants will receive a Be the One | Oregon pin.
Visiting Oregon during the Legion’s Spring department executive meeting is the Honorable Dan K. Wiley, national executive committeeman from Kansas. Wiley is candidate for National Commander 2025-2026 and is making his initial visit to Oregon in support of his candidacy. In addition to extensive American Legion service experiences, he is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and has held appointments as City of Leavenworth Municipal Judge as well as appointment by the Governor as a State of Kansas District Court Judge.
